[PSI 서포터즈 1기] 제약산업에서 오가노이드: 신약 개발에서 장기 이식까지 오가노이드의 역할

오가노이드(Organoid)는 분화능을 지닌 줄기세포를 3D 세포배양기법으로 응집•재조합하여 형성한 장기-특이적 세포 집합체입니다. ’Organ(장기)’과 접미사 ‘noid(유사하다)’ 두 단어가 합쳐진 용어로, 유사 장기, 장기 유사체, 미니 장기라고도 불립니다. 2009년 한스 클레버스 연구팀의 장 오가노이드 개발이 네이처(Nature) 학술지에 발표된 이후, 오가노이드는 신약 개발과 장기 이식 연구에 중요한 도구로 떠오르고 있습니다. 오가노이드는 인체 장기의 복잡한 생리학적 특성을 정교하게 모방할 수 있어, 다양한 연구와 치료법 개발에 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대됩니다.

Organoids are three-dimensional cell aggregates formed by clustering and recombining stem cells with differentiation potential using 3D cell culture techniques. Since the groundbreaking development of intestinal organoids by Hans Clevers’ research team in 2009, published in Nature, organoid research has flourished. Organoids can closely mimic the complex physiological characteristics of human organs, making them invaluable in drug development and organ transplantation research.
